Last night the Mets made their first smart decision of the off-season. They re-signed Fernando Tatis to a one-year deal worth $1.75 million. I hope this is the first of many smart moves to be made. The Mets have also confirmed what I have been saying since the off-season began and even before that, they will be platooning Daniel Murphy and Tatis in left field next year. I think this is a good time to say, "I told you so" to all of the naysayers out there. I say it with love. This might be another way of them saying, "Forget Manny Ramirez". This is hard to believe considering Minaya's obsession over the left fielder. I guess only time will tell. |

Rightfully so, the Philadelphia Phillies are the to team to beat as they are the 2008 World Series champions. It pains me to say it, type it, whatever way you look at it, it's painful. We're going to be hearing about this every time we play the Phillies or tied in the standings with them, etc... This is not going to sit well with Omar Minaya and the Wilpons.
Omar better consider going after K-Rod aggressively and not get the second best thing out on the market, 33-year old Brian Fuentes. The Phillies shown how important a closer is. Brad Lidge went a perfect 41 for 41 during the regular season and 7 for 7 in the post-season. The Phillies were also 80-0 going into the ninth inning. That's a staggeringly impressive stat, you can't knock them there. I guess that's what happen when you have a bullpen.
Their mid-season acquisitions paid off for them. Acquiring Scott Eyre to sure up the bullpen and Joe Blanton to sure up the rotation. |

Congratulations to Fernando Tatis who won this years National Leagues comeback player of the year award.
If you remember, Tatis's season came to an abrupt end when he separated his shoulder on September 16th. Tatis played in 92 games, hitting .292 with 11 HR and 47 RBI. Tatis is a free agent, so I don't see why Omar won't bring him back for a little extra money than he made this year. |

I was just reading over at MLBTradeRumors, that the Mets don't believe Francisco Rodriguez (K-Rod) is worth his asking price and Omar Minaya doesn't intend to go after the biggest free agent out their, Manny Ramirez.
So what does this mean? Are we in for another bad offseason and disappointing season with the same group of guys who choked the last the two seasons away? No closer, no clutch hitter, right back where we started. I hope this is just a way to throw off some of the other GM's. There's no way we can succeed with the same ol' guys, we need a clutch hitter and a closer. I'm not saying get both these guys, I don't see why not though, they have the money. Let's not forget the Phillies have thrown out their interest in Manny to fill Pat Burrell's spot in the lineup.
We're just going to have to wait until the GM meetings on November 3rd and the Winter meetings, which will begin on December 8th and run through the 11th to see how our season will play out. Cross your fingers. |

We all know how bad the economy is right now, prices going up for daily living, struggling to hold onto your house, etc...and now with ticket prices going through the roof next year, how is everyone going to handle going to a game? Most of us don't make millions a year like the players do, which we pay for, but this is going to hit the average American hard. Children that want to go to the game with their Mother and Father, like most of us have done at one time during our lives, but these parents that want to take their child to a ballgame won't be able to, if you had a choice to pay one of your bills or go see the Mets/Yankees play, the choice is obvious no matter if your a die-hard or not. I'm not going to lie, I can't afford to go a game and enjoy myself anymore. I went to a total of two games in the past two seasons, certainly a huge decline from 2006 where I went to 19 games. The prices of food and drinks is outrageous and prepare to pay extra next season, maybe take out a loan just to go the game with friends and family. It seems everything is going up, from energy to milk to gas, etc... but our salaries still remain the same. I made a total of $4.42 from this site this year, this isn't my job, just a hobby, hopefully in the future this is my full-time job. I make my living being a Computer technician, which isn't great, so I don't have the luxury of going to a ton of games anymore, the best thing I did was by a 42' Plasma screen HDTV and enjoy every game in HD on my Directv service, it's cheaper and I enjoy watching the Mets and all my other sports in high res and buying food at a reasonable price. Wouldn't you?
The point of this is, how is everyone here that reads my blog is going to handle going to games next year? I know none of you comment here, but that's alright, just take what I wrote and think bout it. But I would like to hear what everyone has to say about this. |

Wow it feels good to be back after my little hiatus. Sorry Mike. I had so much going on. Let's get to the blog! I have finally gotten over the devastating end to the Mets season. Some people are pissed off about it. I was more hurt than anything else. I have to say I agree with Jeff Wilpon. This team definitely over-acheived. There is no way this team should have even come close to making the playoffs with the injuries they suffered. Think of all the key players they lost throughout the season: "Grandpa Met", Pagan, Tatis, Maine, Pedro, Church, Wagner. This team was starting to look more and more like a team in the minors with all of the replacements. I have to say I was starting to wonder who was left in the minors to call-up to the big club in September. It was ridiculous. Nonetheless, this team managed to work through their injuries and go for it. Yes, the bullpen lost it down the stretch. Nobody can seem to realize that it was the bullpen holding the club together through the first part of the season when the starters were going nowhere. In the second half, the roles reversed. They could not work together. Stop with the bullpen complaints. They were overworked, courtesy of Randolph, as usual. He loved overworking them. The offense was wishy-washy the whole season. Church was carrying the whole team until his concussion. Delgado came through in full force in the month of June after the Yankees game. From then on out, it was all Delgado. Wright and Beltran took their sweet time getting their acts together. Tatis was "Mr. Grit" the whole season. If the game went into extra-innings, we all screamed for Tatis to come up. He was the comeback story of the year to me. Bottom line, there is blame to go all around. They need to go through this team with a fine-toothed comb. Moves need to be made. I agree to a certain degree with picking up Delgado's option. There is noone else out there. I want to see everyone out of the bullpen except Smith and Feliciano. I heard Schoenweiss has requested to be traded. I cannot confirm this. DO NOT QUOTE ME ON THIS! Murphy will be platooning in left field. Santana, Pelfrey, Beltran, Wright and Reyes will be kept. The team is going to be built around them. Martinez, more than likely, will not be returning. Try not to get your hopes up for K-Rod. Too much money. There is too much the Mets need to get. I would like for the Mets to go after Fuentes, again, only this time I want them to actually get him. Perez is going to be very expensive with Scott Boras as his agent. Not sure how much of a priority the Mets are going to consider him. All in all, I am content with the Mets season. Contrary to what most people think, they did not choke. They over-achieved. They never should have been in a position to make it to the postseason. |

Forget all the excitement about Bobby V coming back. Jerry Manuel just signed a two-year deal with a third year club option. |

Say it ain't so, Bobby V says he's interested in re-joining the Mets. Over at ESPN radio, Andrew Marchand was told by Bobby, "I am working for a team that needs me and wants me as their man. I love it here, but I am an American and love great challenges. I was a in a Met uniform in the '70s, '80s, '90s, 2000, and would love to be there in the next decade."
How fitting this will be in bringing back a fan favorite to open our new ballpark next season. With Omar Minaya and Jerry Manuel hitting a wall in their negotiations, Manuel was offered a two-year deal and the hold up is a possible third year. Which is a little outrageous for someone who was a bench coach during the first collapse and managing through this years. |
