Making a statement in DC

Mets swat the Nats 12-0. John Maine made his return and pitched a solid five innings.

Did we need this or what? A great offensive night, great pitching, NOT going to the bullpen, we used Brian Stokes, but I was referring to the usual suspects.

Five hits, five walks and eight runs. That's what the third inning was like, that was when we blew this game wide open. RBI from Murphy, Tatis, Maine, Reyes, Delgado, and Beltran. Did you get all that? This was team effort and a perfect game for us. This is exactly what we needed to get going and hopefully sweep these bums and head into Pittsburgh hot.

John Maine hasn't pitched since July 28th, and honestly, he pitched better tonight than he has in quite a while. We knew he was on a strict pitch count, between 90-100, well, he threw 90 pitches, no need to push him when we had a ten run lead. Maine went scoreless innings, only allowed one hit, his walks were a little high, walking four, he also struck out six, which is great.

Brian Stokes, wow, what a story he has been. Gave us a good start last week, tonight, he gave FOUR scoreless innings out of the pen. If he continues to pitch like this, he would be a great asset to this pen and add some depth so we won't have to go to the same guys night after night.

Daniel Murphy is my new favorite Met. This kid is just great at the plate, he could do it all, he could take the walk, work the count, go the other way, with power I might add, good situational hitter. Everything. Murph had a good night at the plate, along with the rest of the team. He finished the night 3 for 6 with a single, double, and a home run (his second on the year and both to the opposite field), three RBI and two runs scored. I didn't like what Gary Cohen said about the possibilities for next season, platooning Murphy and Evans. Screw that, Murphy doesn't need to be platooned with anybody, he is far more superior than Nick Evans and if I had to choose I'd go with Murph, obviously.

WP: J. Maine (10-7)
LP: J. Bergmann (2-9)
